Risk Management is a department within the Office of Finance. Risk Management is the process of planning, organizing, leading and controlling the revenues and activities of the organization in order to minimize the adverse effects of “accidental losses” upon the organization including injury to persons, damage or loss of property, workers’ compensation, and auto first- and third-party claims.
A variety of techniques may be recommended as appropriate including increasing safety of the activity or transferring responsibility for safety and/or consequences of participation.
Our goal is to minimize the adverse effects of unpredictable events. Toward this end, we utilize a number of processes and tools:
- Maintain current values for buildings, contents and movable property.
- Respond to all property, liability and other casualty losses, initiating investigations and accomplishing the appropriate resolution of all claims
- Develop programs for loss prevention based on available loss data
- Coordinate loss control activities
- Authorize and maintain a database of approved drivers, vehicle list
- Manage special insurance programs (i.e. special event insurance, etc.)
- Review insurance language in vendor and research contracts to control transfer of risk review and approve Certificates of Insurance for vendors and facility users and maintain database of insurance information
The Roman Catholic Diocese Self-Administered Insurance Program provides first line of coverage for General Liability, Workers’ Compensation, Property, Auto, and Boiler and Machinery protection for the various exposures in the Roman Catholic Diocese.
Risk Management conducts a variety of activities to reduce our risk of loss. We interact with departments and lay personnel in a variety of ways to reduce the potential for loss and the impact that losses might have on day-to-day operations. Our goal is to be proactive in mitigating exposures before they occur. To that end, we will conduct building inspections, review contracts, leases and projects to analyze and identify potential risk.
Workers' Compensation Program
In the event of an injury, whether the employee will lose time from work or not, it is imperative that the incident be reported as soon as possible to the reporting supervisor. The law mandates deadlines in which to deny or accept claims. Claims which are reported late may result in fines from the Workers’ Compensation Board.
In the event of an incident involving an employee whether injured or not, the following steps are necessary:
- See that medical assistance is provided immediately.
- Obtain details of the accident.
- Identify any witnesses.
- Obtain photographs of the accident site, if possible.
- Identify any third-party involvement, i.e., equipment malfunction or damages caused by an outside entity.
Complete the Employer’s First Report of Occupational Injury or Disease Form. MEMIC is our insurance carrier for this coverage and accepts first report claim notices twenty-four hours a day through three methods: telephone, Internet and fax. When reporting a claim, you will be asked for our policy number. The policy number, effective July 1, 2019, is # 5101801149.
